The platform this website is built on, NING, is very Web 2.0 capable. Meaning that most every communication is dynamic, and two-way, rather than one-way- and so, is more apt to build community and encourage collaboration than static websites. (Here are some of the more basic features.) Take a look at this page of options for a starter: Online Collaboration Tools 2008- the best online tools for every virtual team.
(This isn't just a diagram- those are all active links to the actual tool pages. Why not check out one or two in the categories that seem most useful to you: project management, group review, etc. Heck, why check out the tool that made this diagram (hint: in the mindmapping category) and make a 'mindmap' of all the webpages relating to your next presentation? They're better than PowerPoint in some contexts- why?- Because they are non-linear and will allow you to better tailor your argument to the particular audience you must present to... (I know mindmapping might sounds like nonsense to some, but, for me anyway, that more depends on the particular mind being mapped.

Whether it be the ability to custom brand, add text and third-party widgets (wikis, to medworm, to...things yet to be invented), individual member pages for each member as powerful as the main page, member profiles, event listings, form interest/special task groups, keep track of real-time activity streams, form discussion groups, offers customizable video players and photo slideshows, viral widgets, Facebook integration, or Control the ads. Most of all, Ning, the platform this website is built on, is a founding partner in Open Social, a consortium of visionary web companies whose importance will grow clearer throughout the next year.

At the conference, we briefly mentioned the ability of each member to embed custom widgets in his/her Member (My Page). Here's what a WEB WIDGET is, and if that term is completely unfamiliar, I suggest enlist the help of a family member under 30, and ask them to look into it for you.

More about Widgets and Online Tools, in the future. My intention isn't to completely overwhelm, but rather to innoculate you to the hype, and expose you to the huge range of online tools that (when they are finally tested under fire by practitioners in the trenches, and retired physicians with an interest in helping the next generation work out the kinks in the design.)

I think we are about to see a new era of online tools. Tools built by web coders who enlist the help of physicians (by comment and ratings feedback) to make tools the way physicians want to use them, rather than second guessing and conjecturing in the absence of actual practice.

That's enough out of me. What do you think?
